What is a XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the URLs of your website’s pages. It helps Google discover which pages are available on your site. Think of it like booking a nice hotel - when you check in, you see recommendation vouchers for activities in the area. Your XML sitemap should contain all relevant pages of your website you want Google to discover.

Is a XML sitemap important?

Is an XML Sitemap Important? Well, surprisingly, the answer is more no than yes - not what you expected, right? Here’s why:

XML sitemaps are one of those overrated SEO terms that often get categorized under "Technical SEO", while in reality, they are anything but technical - at least in my opinion! At best, XML sitemaps are merely a discovery tool that helps Google find pages. They do not influence crawling, indexing, or ranking. In fact, many websites rank perfectly fine without an XML sitemap. They are often overhyped by agencies and SEO specialists. However, this doesn’t mean they are useless. Think back to the earlier example of booking a hotel on vacation - it’s like a collection of recommendations for search engines. When you add new pages, an XML sitemap increases the chances that Google will discover them. Additionally, every URL in an XML sitemap contains a "lastmod" element, which tells Google when a page was last updated - not an insignificant detail!

FAQ Find My XML Sitemap Chrome Extension

Should I include my XML Sitemap in robots.txt?

The effectiveness of this practice is still debated among SEO professionals. However, given what we know about the importance of sitemaps, it certainly doesn’t hurt to include it in your robots.txt file. In fact, many SEO tools and search engines check robots.txt before crawling a site, so mentioning your sitemap there can be beneficial. Plus, it can come in handy if you ever forget the URL—and are too lazy to use our Chrome extension!

Should I submit all XML Sitemaps (including child sitemaps) to Google Search Console?

Adding only your index.xml sitemap is often sufficient, as it links to all other sitemaps. However, for a more detailed overview, we recommend submitting each XML sitemap separately to Google Search Console. This allows you to monitor them individually for any issues.

What if one of my found XML Sitemaps has a 301 status code?

No worries! Just check where the URL is redirecting and submit that final destination sitemap instead - in both robots.txt and Google Search Console.

Why does it take so long for the Chrome Extension to find my XML Sitemaps?

The extension sends a large number of requests to detect all relevant XML sitemaps for your website. It tries multiple URL variations and verifies their status codes. This process takes time, so be patient! Luckily, once the sitemaps are found, you can easily copy them to your clipboard.
